Biography

"Sunday Morning Love," "Double Trouble," and "I've Got a Twenty Room House" are among the titles in the rich rhythm and blues catalogue this songwriter and performer is responsible for, along with partner Sam Mosley. The team began working for the Malaco outfit in the '70s, urged to come up with material that would be suitable for performers such as Bobby "Blue" Bland, Latimore, and Johnnie Taylor, among others. Growing interest in the artistry of songwriting teams behind the commercial smashes led to opportunities for Mosley and Robert A. Johnson to record on their own, resulting in a pair of albums including the critically-lauded Juke Joint.

Unfortunately, Johnson's life ended before production wrapped up on this album, making it a Juke Joint that is much a memorial as a place to let the good times roll. Johnson had been an essential part of the kind of urban Southern soul sound associated with Malaco. The duo's own recordings featuring excellent sidemen such as pianist Jimmy Johnson were compared to the likes of Z.Z. Hill, as well as the inevitable link with Bland. Many of the latter artist's sides from the '80s feature at least one tune written by this team. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide
