Robert Grosvenor, 1st Marquess of Westminster, KG, PC (22 March 1767 – 17 February 1845) was the son of the 1st Earl Grosvenor, whom he succeeded in 1802 as 2nd Earl Grosvenor. He was created Marquess of Westminster in 1831.[1]
Grosvenor was educated at Westminster School, Harrow School and Trinity College, Cambridge.[2] He was responsible for the development of Belgravia, and a statue of him by Jonathan Wylder was placed in Belgrave Square in 1998.[3]
He married Lady Eleanor Egerton, daughter of the 1st Earl of Wilton, on 28 April 1794.[4] They had three sons:
- Richard, Earl Grosvenor (1795–1869), later 2nd Marquess of Westminster
- Lord Thomas Grosvenor (1799–1882), later 2nd Earl of Wilton
- Lord Robert Grosvenor (1801–1893), later 1st Baron Ebury
In 1793, he was sworn a Privy Counsellor. He was Lord Lieutenant of Flintshire between 1798–1845, and was invested as a Knight of the Garter on March 11, 1841.[5]
Thoroughbred horse racing
Lord Westminster was the inheritor of his father's Eaton Stud and owned and bred a number of successful Thoroughbred racehorses, notably the St. Leger Stakes winner Touchstone. The horse also became a four-time Champion sire in Great Britain & Ireland and whose progeny included three Epsom Derby winners.
