(b Tyn-y-groes, Gwynedd, 18 Sept 1849; d Montreal, 27 Feb 1919). Painter. He trained in Boston and in 1876 studied for one term at the Slade School of Art, London, under Alphonse Legros. In 1877-8 he studied in the studio of L?on Bonnat in Paris. He was attracted to Europe and spent several periods painting in England, France, Italy, Germany and Spain. He returned to Canada in 1879, settling in Montreal. In 1880 he was made an Academician of the newly formed Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, and he later served 13 years as its President.
