1992The Bridges of Madison County. Waller's sentimental novella, the love story of a lonely Iowa farm wife and a footloose photographer, becomes a publishing phenomenon. Written in two weeks, the book is almost universally panned by critics but stays on the bestseller lists for well over a year, at first promoted by independent booksellers, then picked up by the major chain stores. It would be made into a popular 1995 film directed by Clint Eastwood. Waller was a professor of business at the University of Northern Iowa.
