Personal life
His father is a lawyer in New York. His brother, Michael, is a novelist living in Manhattan.
Early life
Maschio was born in New York but grew up in Syosset, Long Island where he attended Syosset High School. After high school, he enrolled at Columbia University in New York City, graduating in 1988. In his senior year he began performing musical theater, appearing in plays such as Pippin, Anything Goes, and The Mystery of Edwin Drood. After college, Robert joined the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre, where he studied acting under Sanford Meisner, developer of the Meisner technique. After leaving the Playhouse, he began a theatre career in New York, appearing in plays at the Synchronicity Space, the Actor's Studio and The American Place Theatre, during which time he started writing and performing his own stand-up comedy.
Career
After making guest appearances on various TV shows such as Bram & Alice, he eventually found fame playing "Dr. Todd 'The Todd' Quinlan," a hypersexual surgeon in friend Bill Lawrence's sitcom Scrubs. The Todd is a very popular character and has a catchphrase of sorts: in any given social experience, he will high-five. Because of this, Robert has mentioned that unlike his co-stars who are constantly asked for autographs, most of his fans just want to high-five him. He has also guest-starred in another Lawrence production, Spin City, in 1996, and played a jury member in Veronica Mars in 2005. During the summer of 2006, he played Louis Browning, a rapist on the daytime soap As The World Turns. Louis Browning was slashed to death by a serial killer called 'the slasher'. Robert Maschio has expressed his enjoyment playing the soap opera role.
