Robert Nelson Jacobs (born 1954) is an American screenwriter.

Jacobs grew up in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. He graduated from Yale University, where he received the Curtis Literary Prize for his short fiction, and he later earned a master’s degree from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. While at Iowa, he published short stories in several literary magazines.

His love of movies took him to California, where it took a number of years for his writing to finally start paying the rent. Jacobs’ script for Chocolat was nominated for an Academy Award for best adapted screenplay. His other produced screenplays include The Shipping News, Dinosaur, Out to Sea, and The Water Horse.

Jacobs is a charter member of the Writers Co-op, a new company based at Warner Brothers that allows its member writers to produce and retain creative control over their own screenplays. He is currently writing an original screenplay for the Co-op.
