Parrott, Robert Parker (1804-77) Union army officer and ordnance manufacturer. As owner of the West Point Foundry in Cold Spring, New York, and later the Greenwood Furnace, Parrott developed a cast-iron rifled cannon strengthened by a wrought-iron band on the breech. Parrott's rifles were used in the Civil War, first by the Confederacy and later by the Union as well, despite complaints that the guns were inaccurate and that there were problems with the ammunition.
