1832Conrad, King of Naples. Conrad's first play, though it has not survived, is known to have been written for the actor James E. Murdoch, and it is produced with much success at Philadelphia's Arch Street Theatre. Conrad is remembered as the best dramatist in Philadelphia after Robert Montgomery Bird and Richard Penn Smith.
1835Jack Cade, the Captain of the Commons. Sometimes titled Aylmere, Conrad's most important play gains him literary prominence in Philadelphia. The blank-verse tragedy concerns the leader of the 1450 rebellion against the government of King Henry VI. The opening performance is delayed because of the leading actor's drunkenness, but it later would star Edwin Forrest and become very successful.
