Robert Trappl (16 January 1939, Vienna) is an Austrian scientist, and Professor at the Center for Brain Research, Medical University of Vienna, Austria, known for his work in the field of cybernetics and Artificial Intelligence.

In the 1960s in Vienna Trappl received a degree in electrical engineering, a degree in sociology from the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna, and PhD in psychology, with a minor in astronomy.[1]
Since the 1970s he has been working at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria. Since the 1980s he is the director of the Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence (OFAI), and later on also the head of the Institute of Medical Cybernetics and Artificial Intelligence at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria. Beside his work at the University he has advized several national and international companies and organizations.[1]
In the 1970s he was President of the Austrian Society for Cybernetic Studies, Austria. In this position in 1980 he co-founded the International Federation for Systems Research (IFSR)[2] of which he became vice-president and from 1986 to 1988 president.
Trappl is also Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journals "Applied Artificial Intelligence: An International Journal" and "Cybernetics and Systems: An International Journal", and on the board of several other journals.
Trappl has published over 180 articles[3] and cooperated in some 34 books.[1] A selection:
