Irish family of artists. John Roberts (d 1794) practised as an architect in Waterford; his works there include the Protestant cathedral of Christ Church (1773) and the Catholic Holy Trinity Cathedral (1793-6; both altered in the 19th century). His sons were both landscape painters: (1) Thomas Roberts concentrated on sea-pieces and estate topography; he died young, after which his brother Sautell abandoned a career as an architect, assumed his brother's name, completed some of his paintings and as (2) Thomas Sautell Roberts became one of Ireland's leading artists in the early 19th century.
