Family of Scottish and American painters. The architect William Robertson ( fl Aberdeen, 1752-77) had three sons who were active as painters, (1) Archibald Robertson, (2) Andrew Robertson and Alexander Robertson (1768-1841). Archibald emigrated to New York in 1791, and he was joined there by Alexander in 1792; together they established the Columbian Academy of Painting at 89 William Street, New York, purported to be the first art school in America. All three brothers specialized in painting miniature portraits.
