Robinsonade, term applied to novels of shipwreck and survival deriving from Defoe's The Life and Strange Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (1719). A German translation appeared in 1720 and numerous imitations followed. Of note are J. G. Schnabel's Die Insel Felsenburg (1731 ff.), Robinson der Jüngere (1779-80) by J. H. Campe, and Der schweizerische Robinson (1812-27) by J. D. Wyß.
