"Rock the Boat" is a R&B song written by Steve "Static" Garrett, Eric Seats and Rapture Stewart for Aaliyah's third studio album, Aaliyah (2001). It was co-produced by Keybeats and released as the album's second single in North America in July 2001 (see 2001 in music) and 3rd internationally during the first quarter of 2002 (see 2002 in music). The song reached the top 20 in the Netherlands, the UK and on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The Hype Williams-directed music video for the song was shot on the weekend of August 25, 2001, just before she died in a plane crash.

Music video

The music video for the song was directed by Hype Williams. It features Aaliyah dancing on a beach, on a boat, and on water in The Bahamas. Filming started on August 22, 2001 and made its world premiere on BET's Access Granted in October 2001. The video was put in the 106 & Park hall of fame, making the countdown over 65 times with follow-up "More Than a Woman" making the number-one spot after it was retired. "Rock the Boat" landed at number 2 on BET's top 100 videos of 2001.

Aaliyah's Death

On Saturday, August 25 2001, at 6:49 pm, just after finishing the "Rock the Boat" in the Bahamas, Aaliyah and seven friends boarded a twin engine Cessna 402B (N8097W) piloted by Luis Morales III. It is believed that this aircraft was headed to Opa-locka Airport near Miami, Florida, when the flight crashed shortly after takeoff. The pilot and all eight passengers were killed.
