Review

Shuttling from the traditional to the somewhat sacrilegious, the earthly to the interstellar, and the minuscule to the infinite, Hugh Blumenfeld's Rocket Science contains an array of brave, bold, and beguiling musical offerings. Sharing simple stories of other people's hometowns and empathizing with the dreams of the everyman, Blumenfeld combines rich yet minimal instrumentation with deeply burred vocals yearning for attentive listeners. From the fulfilling instrumental duet "Mighty Quiet" to the calm yet boisterous cry of "Zhang Jingsheng" and the rocking chug of "I Only Sing About Love," Blumenfeld's breadth of form and content are vastly impressive. Though he alludes to a number of personal limitations through his endearingly honest songs, Blumenfeld determinedly works his way along, much like the hero of his perspective-altering ballad "The Snail" or the "Little Endymion" remembered by Blumenfeld in the fortifying march "Shoot the Moon." Ever the folkie, Blumenfeld takes a few lyrical left jabs at the right, pointing out the scorned political correctness of Jesus, decrying the treatment of other political prisoners throughout time and space, and, in the end, offering this Rocket as a musically multifaceted means of escape. ~ Matthew Robinson, All Music Guide
