Rockport Fitness Walking Test

A test developed in the United States by cardiologists and exercise physiologists to determine fitness and monitor progress during an exercise programme. The fitness ratings are based on the speed at which you can walk exactly 1.6 km (1 mile) on a flat course, and the effect of the walk on your heart rate (assessed from a 15 second count of pulse rate immediately after the walk is completed). The faster you can complete the walk and the lower the effect of walking on heart rate, the fitter you are (figure 56). You are advised to warm-up for 10-15 minutes before the test, and to wear loose clothing and good shoes suitable for walking.

The test is generally regarded as quite safe and can be used by anyone. However, if you are over 35 years old, or if you have had any signs of heart disease, you should consult a doctor before doing it.
