Rockton is a village in Winnebago County, Illinois, United States located on the banks of the Rock River. The population was 5,296 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Rockton is located at 42°27′3″N, 89°3′50″W (42.450753, -89.063844)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 9.6 km² (3.7 mi²). 9.1 km² (3.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (4.86%) is water.

History

Native American tribes originally inhabited the area. Stephen Mack, Jr., who married the Indian woman named Hononegah, is considered the founder of the Rockton area. His original outpost (c. 1830s) later became part of an area called Macktown, and later still the area took on the name Rockton. A number of Canadians, some French-Canadian, moved to the Rockton area in the 1840/1850s time frame.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 5,296 people, 1,930 households, and 1,464 families residing in the village. The population density was 580.9/km² (1,505.5/mi²). There were 2,008 housing units at an average density of 220.3/km² (570.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.47% White, 0.70% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.81% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 0.45% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.53% of the population.

There were 1,930 households out of which 42.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.2% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.1% were non-families. 20.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.18.

In the village the population was spread out with 31.1% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 31.4% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 9.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 97.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.0 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $57,292, and the median income for a family was $62,863. Males had a median income of $47,321 versus $32,771 for females. The per capita income for the village was $24,078. About 1.4% of families and 1.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.3% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.

High school

The high school that serves the town of Rockton, as well as several others, is Hononegah High School.
