(b Stockholm, 15 Nov 1916). Swedish painter, printmaker, stage designer and teacher. He studied portrait painting under the Swedish painter Edward Berggren (1876-1961) and at the Technical School in Stockholm from 1934 to 1936. He spent the next two years studying with Peter Rostrup B?yesen (1882-1952) in Copenhagen and completed his studies at the School of Art in Stockholm from 1938 to 1944. From 1949 to 1951 he travelled extensively in Norway, France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain and North Africa. In 1953 he began teaching at the School of Art in Stockholm, becoming a full professor there in 1958; from 1958 to 1968 he was director of the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm.
