Rodopoli (Greek: Ροδόπολη, meaning "City of Roses"), older name Bala, is an old community in Attica, Greece -- about 22 km north of Athens. Part of Rodopoli has retained its old village character, while its eastern (and higher elevation) part has seen the development of higher quality residential properties. Its building regulations ensure the conservation of its character as a pleasant, purely residential, green community, with only a handful of small shops - just two bakeries, three tavernas, one pharmacy and two news-kiosks (the kiosk or "periptero" being the Greek equivalent of a ...super market, in about 4 square metres of surface). Rodopoli is on the western/northwestern edge of Mount Penteli. The Athenian plain is located to the southwest of the community. Rodopoli is accessed through an interchange with GR-1/E75 (Athens - Lamia - Thessaloniki) at the 21st km (Varymbombi exit) and another one further on (Agios Stefanos exit). Another approach is through Thisseos {Theseus) Avenue which is also GR-83. Rodopoli is located SE of Thiva, S of Euboea and Oropos, SW of Marathon, NE of Kifissia and NE of the Attiki Odos (number 6).

Until the 1980s, farmlands covered the southwestern part of Rodopoli, while the remainder was covered by Aleppo-pine forests. New building development started in the 1990s, with most of the population now being urban. Housing development continues to this day.

The 1995 Attica fire of July affected the eastern portion of the Penteli mountain but damages to properties were rare but smoke covered the area. On September 7, 1999, an earthquake rumbled Rodopoli causing no damages to properties, although its epicentre was very close to the community.

Other

Rodopoli has one first-grade school, one high school, two churches, one square ("plateia"), but no banks nor a post office .
