Biography

British art director Roger Furse worked closely with Sir Laurence Olivier on his Shakespearan plays and films, most notably creating the dark, moody sets for Hamlet (1948) which netted him an Oscar. Furse, the son of Lieutenant General Sir William Furse, received his education at Eton and at the Slade School for Fine Arts. He then went on to become a commercial artist in New York, Paris, and Philadelphia. He designed his first sets for the London theater in the early 1930s. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
