( b Zürich, 14 Sept 1910). Swiss composer and opera director. He studied with Scherchen and Vogel and managed the Hamburg Staatsoper (1959-73) and Paris Opéra (1973-80). His compositions, mostly predating these appointments, include operas and orchestral pieces (Concerto for jazz band and orchestra, 1954).
