Romain-Vincent Jeuffroy

(b Rouen, 16 July 1749; d Bas-Primay, nr Marly, 2 Aug 1826). French gem engraver and medallist. He trained in Rouen, where in 1764 he won a prize at the Acad?mie, and in Italy he trained as a gem engraver under Johann Peter Pichler (1766-1807). On his return to France he was appointed Director of the Ecole de Gravure en Pierres Fines and was a founder-member of the engravers section of the Institut in 1803. From 1804 to 1819 he exhibited medals and gems at the Salon. His contributions to the series of Napoleonic medals organized by Baron Vivant Denon in 1804-15 included the medals for the Invasion of England (1804), the Coronation of Napoleon in Paris (1804), the Battle of Sommo-Sierra (1808) and the Battle of Moscow (1812). Examples of these are in the Cabinet des M?dailles, Biblioth?que Nationale, Paris, as are a number of his gems, including pieces after the Antique and portraits of such contemporaries as Charles de Wailly (1729-98) and Antoine-Fran?ois Fourcroy (1755-1809).
