French Literature Companion: Roman héroïque

Term used to refer to the multivolume historical novel of love and adventure which was the dominant form of prose fiction in the 17th c. Its principal exponents were Gomberville, La Calprenède, and above all Madeleine de Scudéry; Artaméne ou le Grand Cyrus is perhaps the finest example of this once-popular genre.
