Biography

As a founding member of the legendary Stooges, guitarist Ron Asheton forever changed the face of rock and roll, his raw, primordial riffs presaging the rise of punk by a decade. Born July 17, 1948 in Washington, D.C., he first surfaced in the teen band the Dirty Shames before joining the Iggy Pop-led Stooges in 1967; the Ann Arbor, MI-based group made their live debut on Halloween of that year, earning immediate notoriety for their frighteningly intense live presence and blistering, primitivist sound. Although celebrated in certain underground circles, the band -- also comprising Asheton's drummer brother Scott and bassist Dave Alexander -- was otherwise almost universally reviled, but still they were signed by Elektra to record their self-titled 1969 debut LP; the album sold poorly, as did its successors (1970's Fun House and 1973's Raw Power), but the Stooges' long-term impact was incalculable -- in effect, their aggressive, take-no-prisoners approach laid the groundwork for the emergence of punk.

After the Stooges disintegrated in the wake of Raw Power's commercial failure, the Asheton siblings formed the short-lived New Order, issuing a self-titled LP on RCA in 1978; Ron next surfaced in the famed Detroit cult outfit Destroy All Monsters, who were briefly darlings of the British music press on the strength of punk-era singles like "Bored" and "Meet the Creeper." In 1981, he joined ex-Radio Birdman members Deniz Tek and Rob Younger in their underground supergroup the New Race, recording the live LP The First and the Last; quiet for the better part of the decade which followed, Asheton returned to active musical duty during the mid-1990s, recording Thin, Slim and None with the Empty Set while also teaming with fellow Destroy All Monsters alum Niagara to release The Last Great Ride under the name Dark Carnival. He also teamed with Mudhoney's Mark Arm, Mike Watt and Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and Steve Shelley in the one-off project the Wilde Rattz, recording a handful of tracks for 1998's glam rock-era film drama Velvet Goldmine. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

The Stooges

Asheton was born in Washington D.C.[1] He already had five years of practice on the accordion behind him when he began playing bass guitar at age 10. Asheton was lead guitarist on the Stooges first two albums, and later appeared as bassist for their third, Raw Power, when he was replaced in both instrument and songwriting prominence by The Stooges' new guitar player, James Williamson. When the Stooges reformed, however, he once again appeared as the band's guitarist.

Other work

Apart from The Stooges, Asheton also played in the bands The New Order (not the UK band New Order), Destroy All Monsters, Dark Carnival, and New Race.

More recently he played with The Wylde Ratttz, a band comprised of some of punk/alt-rock's most renowned and respected musicians. The band included Mike Watt of the Minutemen; J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr.; Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth; and Mark Arm of Mudhoney. It contributed a cover version of the Stooges song T.V. Eye to the soundtrack for the Todd Haynes film Velvet Goldmine, which starred Ewan McGregor and Jonathan Rhys Meyers.[4]

Asheton also acted, appearing with The Texas Chain Saw Massacre star Gunnar Hansen in Mosquito which was released 1995. He also appeared in two other films: Frostbiter: Wrath of the Wendigo and Legion of the Night.

Death

Asheton was found dead in his bed by police at his home in Ann Arbor, Michigan in the early hours of January 6, 2009, apparently having died of a heart attack a couple of days earlier. Police were summoned to Asheton's house by his personal assistant, who had been unable to reach him for several days.[5] Sonic Youth's album The Eternal is dedicated to him.

Musical equipment

Asheton mainly relied on simple set ups with very few effect pedals.[6]
