Biography

Back in the 1960s, Ron Dante racked up a handful of number one singles. Unlike other hit-makers of the era, however, no one knew his name. That was because Dante was the voice behind comic book and cartoon characters like the Archies who had stepped off the printed page onto the world of music's stage. He received no credit for singing the 1969 chart topper "Sugar, Sugar," nor for the Archies' next release, "Jingle Jangle," which made it into the Top Ten. Despite the lack of public acknowledgement, Dante was the band's voice for five years. During that time he also took on the role of producer and penned a few numbers.

While the Archies were riding high in the late '60s, Dante scored again by lending his voice to the Cuff Links for "Tracy." That single, too, became a winner and hit the Top Ten. Previously, with the Detergents in the mid-'60s, he helped take "Leader of the Laundromat" into the Top Ten. The song was a takeoff of "Leader of the Pack," sung by the Shangi-Las. He went on to release recordings under a few different stage names and composed several scores. Some of Dante's other singing spots reached a wide audience, but many still would not readily associate his work with his name. He has sung in numerous commercials, including one for McDonald's ("You deserve a break today").

During the '70s he became a producer at Bell Records for Barry Manilow, including the songs "Copacabana," "I Write the Songs," "Could It Be Magic," and "Mandy." Among the other artists for whom he produced recordings are Ray Charles, Cher, John Denver, Pat Benatar, and Dionne Warwick. He has also produced on Broadway, including Children of a Lesser God and Ain't Misbehavin', as well as 15 other productions. Dante's real name is Carmine Granito. In his early teens he joined a group called the Persuaders. Wanting a stage name that sounded less ethnic than his own, he borrowed the first name of the band's guitarist and took his surname from the movies. Two years later he was on his own, knocking on doors within the Brill Building, trying to shop around his demos and getting kicked out at every turn. Bobby Breed, an actor turned manager, took him on for about half a year. He soon came to the attention of music publisher Don Kirshner, who gave him a start singing demos. He moved on to writing songs for Gene Pitney, James Darren, Bobby Darin, Bobby Vee, and others, and singing background for artists such as Jay & the Americans and the McCoys. ~ Linda Seida, All Music Guide

Not to be confused with hypnotist Ronald Pellar, aka Ronald Dante or Dr. Dante.

Ron Dante (born Carmine Granito, August 22, 1945, Staten Island, New York) is an American singer, songwriter and record producer. Dante is best known as the lead vocalist for the cartoon group, The Archies, from 1968 to 1971. And also provided lead vocals for the group The Cuff Links.

Career

The Archies third single, "Sugar, Sugar", written by producer Jeff Barry with Andy Kim, was the U.S. number one selling record of 1969. Prior to his stint with The Archies, in 1965, Dante was a member of the parody group The Detergents, who recorded a song jokingly entitled "Leader of the Laundromat".[citation needed] Concurrent with his work on the Archies project, Dante was also employed as a session singer, recording demonstration records, and he also sang many television and commercial jingles.

In 1969, Dante recorded an album under the group name of The Cufflinks for his old Detergents songwriter-producers Paul Vance and Lee Pockriss. Providing both lead and background vocals through overdubbing (as he did with most of the male Archies' vocals) Dante hit the U.S. Top 10 with the single "Tracy", at the same time that The Archies' "Sugar, Sugar" was at the top spot on the same chart. Dante was anonymous on both tracks, as with all Archies and Cufflinks recordings.

Dante's first album release under his own name, on Don Kirshner's label, was Ron Dante Brings You Up in 1970. In 1972, also under the supervision of Kirshner, Dante became lead vocalist for another cartoon group, The Chan Clan. In 1979, he recorded a disco album under the name Dante's Inferno for the short lived Infinity Records label, and in 1981 his second solo album Street Angel was released.

From 1973 to 1981, Dante was the record producer for singer Barry Manilow. Dante often sang background vocals on Manilow's recordings, including the single "Mandy." Dante also continued to record sporadically during those years; in 1975, with Manilow as the producer, Dante released a dance version of "Sugar, Sugar" as a single under his own name. In 1978, Dante produced the Tony Award winning musical revue Ain't Misbehavin' on Broadway. During this same period, Dante, who was a Manhattan neighbor of George Plimpton, was invited to serve as the publisher of the Paris Review (1978-85).[1][2]

Dante remains active as a singer, producer, and concert performer. His solo CD Favorites was released in 1999, and another CD, Saturday Night Blast, was issued in 2004. The extended play California Weekend CD was released in 2006.

Contrary to popular belief, the lead verses to the Archies' single, "Jingle Jangle" (portrayed as being sung by either Betty or Veronica) were not sung by a female vocalist. It was sung by Dante using a falsetto voice.[3]
