Rondò

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Email

A type of aria popular in the late 18th century, consisting of two sections, one slow and one fast, each of which may be repeated. One or both may be in gavotte rhythm. The best-known examples are by Mozart; they include ‘Non mi dir’ (Don Giovanni) and ‘Per pietà’ (Così fan tutte). The rondò is an important precursor of the 19th-century cantabile-cabaletta scheme.
