Rood

Large-scale representation of the crucified Christ with flanking figures, although the term strictly refers to the balk of the cross. Roods are confined to the Western Church and are distinguished from altarpieces or Calvary groups by their position above the entrance to the ritual choir, which was often separated from the congregation by a screen, upon which the rood was placed (see SCREEN (i),
