Roots of Rhythm & Blues

Album Review: Roots of Rhythm & Blues

Review

The country of origin of this disc remains murky, but its 18 McCracklin tracks, from his 1957-58 layover at Chess (there was a belated 1962 date as well), are in dire need of domestic reissue -- so until that happens, this one (shared with Paul Gayten) will just have to do. McCracklin's smash dance tune "The Walk" is here, along with the amusing playlet "He Knows the Rules" (immaculate axe by Lafayette Thomas), a jumping "Everybody Rock," and another workout that didn't fare as well, "The Wobble." ~ Bill Dahl, All Music Guide
