Review

Often overshadowed by contemporary producers like Bunny Lee and Henry "Junjo" Lawes, Errol "Don" Mais was instrumental in bringing the roots reggae tradition in line with the burgeoning sound of late-'70s dancehall. Filling the roster with Greenwich Town talent like himself, Mais released the bulk of his records on his own Roots Tradition label. Along with the such singers as Phillip Frazer, Sammy Dread, and Rod Taylor, Mais also produced DJs like Toyan and Peter Ranking & General Lucky (collectively known as Peter & Lucky). All of them are featured on this fine collection of Mais produced-tracks, along with a cut by the nine-year-old Little John, two sides by Mais as Jah Bible, and a few crucial dub tracks. Topped off with fine work by both the Roots Radics and Soul Syndicate bands, Roots Tradition From the Vineyard gives Mais the kind of quality showcase his talents deserve. ~ Stephen Cook, Rovi
