Until January 29, 2009, RET fully employed the National Tariff System, like other local transport companies in the Netherlands. Since that date however, the metro can only be used by people using an OV-chipkaart. Until February 11, 2010, the National Tariff System was still valid in buses and trams, but that system now has also been dropped in favor of the OV-chipkaart.
