Arae Flaviae
The Roman name may have meant the 'Altar-like Monuments of Flavia' from the Latin
ara 'altar'. The present name may mean the 'Camp of a Company (of troops)' from
rotte 'company' or 'file' and
weiler 'camp' or 'settlement'. It has given its name to the Rottweiler, a working dog left here by the departing Roman legions.
