Originally telecast on The Travel Channel December 30, 1996, Route 66: A Cruise Down Mainstreet is hosted by supermodel Hunter Reno, and features interviews, archival footage, and photographs to document the legendary glamour and excitement of what used to be the main east-west highway crossing the United States from Chicago to Los Angeles, ending in Santa Monica at a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The road has since been renamed, covered over and in places rerouted. Among the program's highlights is an interview with Bob Audette, who owns 20 acres along the old Route 66 near Albuquerque, NM, including a colorful roadside attraction that boasts a collection of automobiles and a snakepit. Audette reminisces about the famed Balanced Rock, showing a photograph of the natural wonder that was toppled by the construction company widening the highway in the early '50s. ~ Steve Blackburn, Rovi
