Review

1990s Routes of Rhythm, Vol. 1: Carnival of Cuba is the first in a three-part series accenting contemporary and classic Afro-Cuban music and offers a wonderful mix of improvisatory and popular styles. The 16-song disc ranges from Los Van Van's rock and synthesizer-tinged modern songs to Bing Crosby's creamy vocals backed by Xavier Cugat's orchestra and Pérez Prado's hit mambo cut. There was also seminal material from the great Arsenio Rodriguez, spectacular trumpet and Afro-Latin jazz by Dizzy Gillespie's orchestra with Chano Pozo, chants and carnival party songs. ~ Ron Wynn, Rovi
