(1837-80), born Longford, Tasmania, the son of an archdeacon, studied engineering in England and pursued his profession in Tasmania, NZ and Victoria. He was also one of Australia's earliest poets although he preserved few of his manuscripts. Writing in the tradition of Wordsworth and the Victorian poets, he attempted with some success to express his affinity for the Australian landscape, though he failed to reach the same heights as Harpur and Kendall. A selection of his poetry was published in 1884, titled
Poems and Other Literary Remains, edited with a biographical sketch by Charles Tomlinson.
