Galbraith Henderson

(b Edinburgh, 1899; d Bromley, 2000). Scottish baritone. Début Queen's Hall, London, 1925 as Zarathustra in Delius's A Mass of Life. Opera début CG 1929 as Donner in Das Rheingold. Member Glyndebourne co. 1934–9 (Papageno, Guglielmo, and sang Count in Le nozze di Figaro on opening night, 1934). Noted in concert and recital work. One of orig. 16 soloists in Serenade to Music (1938). Retired 1952. Prof. of singing RAM 1940–74. Private pupils incl. Kathleen Ferrier. Cond. of several choirs, incl. Nottingham Oriana Choir 1936–52. CBE 1970.
