The RTÉ Sports Person of the Year is one of the most prestigious all-sport awards in Irish sport. The accolade is given to one sportsman or sportswoman, usually Irish, every year. The winner of the award is decided by a panel of experts who choose a winner from a shortlist of candidates towards the end of the calendar year. The 2006 panel of experts included Eamon Dunphy, George Hook, Pat Spillane, Cyril Farrell, Ted Walsh and Jerry Kiernan. A number of other awards are presented at the ceremony including the team of the year and hall of fame awards.
