Senator Ruben S. Ayala Senior High School, often abbreviated as Ayala High School and AHS, is located in Chino Hills, California and is one of the four regular high schools in the Chino Valley Unified School District. The school was established in 1990 and named after California state senator Ruben S. Ayala. The current principal is Dr. Diana Yarboi.

In the Freeway Complex Fire, Ayala was used as an evacuation site for the City of Chino Hills and Carbon Canyon.

Layout

AHS is divided into quads labeled A through H, each quad designated for a specific subject. However, due to overcrowding, some classes are taught in quads related to other subjects.

  • A is the Administration Building
  • B mainly holds physical science classrooms with laboratory equipment
  • C houses the performing arts classrooms and stage (band, choir, drama)
  • D holds vocational classrooms and tools (i.e. metal drills, ceramics, sewing machines and drafting boards)
  • E is the library and also holds a computer classroom
  • F holds mainly English and history classrooms
    • along with various electives
  • G is the gymnasium with a wooden basketball court
    • Physical Education is taught here
    • the tennis courts, swimming pool, baseball field, running track and football field are behind
    • the soccer and band field is located behind quads D, E and F
  • H holds math and Computer classrooms
    • various other classes are taught in the portables. (i.e. History, Foreign Language, Physical Education)
  • Cafeteria holds food. It is located adjacent to the C Quad.

Expansion

There have been two rows of portable classrooms added to quads B, D, F and H. An additional two rows of classrooms have been added to quad H.

Academics

Various information

  • Ayala's USB Leadership Program recently received the California Association of Student Leaders Outstanding Activities Program Award. An extensive application was submitted by Student Body President Camila Moreno, and after being one of the few schools in the state selected, Ayala was recognized with this award at the California Association of Student Leaders State Conference in San Jose, CA in March 2009.
  • The Ayala BAC (Band and Colorguard) is nationally recognized as a consistent top performing group. In recent years, they have have attended competitions such as the Western Band Association field tournaments and Championships as well as several Bands of America regionals, and the largest marching band competition: Bands of America: Grand Nationals.   • The Ayala Percussion Ensemble and Ayala Concert Percussion Ensemble are also nationally recognized performing groups. The percussion ensemble is a marching and performing drumline, and the concert percussion ensemble, which also focuses on musicianship and artistry, has no marching involved. Beginning their "indoor season" in December, they attend two competitive circuits, performing in Southern California Percussion Alliance (SCPA) competitions as well as Winter Guard International (WGI) regionals and championships. The WGI championships are held in Dayton, Ohio and marks the end of the ensemble's "season" in mid to late April. The Ayala Percussion Ensemble performs in the Percussion Scholastic World (PSW) division for both competition circuits, while the Ayala Concert Percussion Ensemble performs in the Percussion Scholastic Concert World (PSCW) division for both competition circuits. In these divisions, any high school drumline/percussion ensemble from around the world may perform and compete alongside other PSW and PSCW division drumline's/ensemble's.   • Ayala High School's Vocal Ensemble performs regularly at state competitions and festivals. They also tour along with Women's Ensemble and Men's Ensemble each year to various parts of the country such as Miami, New York City, New Orleans, Houston, San Antonio, Hawaii, Chicago, and Puerto Rico.
  • There is a Theatre Arts program, with classes that start with Intro to Theatre Arts, then Advanced Theatre, and finally Production and Performance (more commonly known as PnP).
  • The class of 2010 had a 94% overall pass rate taking the CAHSEE (California High School Exit Examination)
  • AHS is a member of the California Interscholastic Federation Sierra League in the Southern Section.
  • As of 2005, Ayala High School has had a Solar Cup team.
  • Ayala Ska Kids, a short lived but populous club founded in 2003, was created to forward a love of local ska, reggae, rocksteady and punk music among its members.
  • The 10th Level Organization has its roots in the school's 2007-2008 year.
  • The class colors for the current 2009-010 school year are; Seniors- Green, Juniors- Purple, Sophomores- Yellow, and Freshmen- Blue.
  • Ayala offers American Sign Language as an option for a foreign language to all students.
