Lothar, Rudolf, true name Spitzer (Budapest, 1865-1943, Budapest), was on the editorial staff of the Neue Freie Presse in Vienna, and was later with the Lokal-Anzeiger in Berlin. He was a prolific and successful provider of light fare for the theatre. His comedies include Satan, Tantaliden (both 1886), Zauberlehrling (1888), Frauenlob (1895), Königsidyll (1896), Glück in der Liebe, Die Königin von Zypern (both 1903), Das Fräulein in Schwarz (1907), Die Hofloge (1918), Casanovas Sohn (1920), Der Werwolf (1921), Die Frau mit der Maske (1922), Die schwarze Messe (1923), Der sprechende Schuh (1924), Erlebnis, Der gute Europäer (both 1927), Das Märchen vom Auto (1930), Ist das denn so wichtig?, Besuch aus dem Jenseits, and Der Papagei (all 1931).
Lothar collaborated with others, including O. Blumenthal, F. Gottwald (b. 1896), and P. G. Wodehouse. He also tried his hand at serious plays (Herzdame, 1902; Die Rosentempler, 1905) and was well known as a librettist, providing in addition to numerous operetta books, the text for d'Albert's Tiefland (1904). Two novels of Berlin are Kurfürstendamm and Der Herr von Berlin (both 1910). In 1899 he published a history of the Burgtheater (Wiener Burgtheater).
