(b Berlin, 20 May 1764; d Berlin, 27 Jan 1850). Sculptor, draughtsman, printmaker and theorist. The sculpture for which he was principally known embraced both restrained, if sentimental, Neo-classicism and a strong and detailed realism. He was the first true exponent of the 19th-century Berlin sculptural tradition.
