(African mythology)
Literally, ‘giver’. The Ankore, a Ugandan people, look upon their god as a potent creator deity. He is Ruhanga, ‘creator’; Kazooba, ‘sun’; and Mukameiguru, ‘he who reigns in the sky’. Rugaba is the great one ‘who sets things in order, creates everything, and gives new life’. The Ankore also say ‘god's smile brings life’, whereas his displeasure means sickness and death. The other observers of human behaviour are two kinds of spirits: emandwa, guardian spirits of the tribe, benevolent and helpful; emizimu, family spirits, are more aggressive and punish bad actions.
