It is set in Prussia (and chiefly in Berlin) in the period preceding the Prussian defeat at Jena (October 1806). The title alludes to a proclamation issued on 17 October 1806 by the Prussian minister Count von der Schulenburg-Kehnert, containing the words, ‘Der König hat eine Bataille verloren. Jetzt ist Ruhe die erste Bürgerpflicht. Ich fordere die Einwohner Berlins dazu auf.’ The novel contrasts the corruption and decadence of an important element in the Prussian nobility with the robust and unpretentious integrity and patriotism of the citizen class. The hero, Louis Bovillard, dies serving the king in the war and is married on his deathbed to Adelheid Alltag, daughter of a civil servant. In 1854 Alexis published a sequel (Isegrimm, 3 vols.) dealing with the aftermath of Jena. A new edition of the novel appeared in 1985.
