Distinction found in the philosophy of law, between the rules of law as they are found in the settled body of law, and the more general principles that may be supposed to have shaped the way judgements have been given. These principles may have a wider ethical or political source. A controversial claim elaborated by Dworkin is that they form an integral part of law itself.
