rum consumption

Statistics Dictionary: rum consumption

A favourite example of nonsense correlation. If the annual consumption of rum in Havana is plotted on a scatter diagram against the salaries of ministers of religion in Massachusetts, then the graph will show a strong positive nonsense correlation that might suggest that it is the ministers who have been consuming the rum (and/or preaching in favour of its consumption).
