Rushmoor is a local government district and borough in Hampshire, England. It covers the towns of Aldershot and Farnborough.
It was formed on 1 April 1974 by the merger of the borough of Aldershot and the Farnborough urban district.
The borough took its name from Rushmoor Arena, a military showground constructed at Rushmoor Bottom in 1923. In May 2000, a referendum was held to on whether to change the name of the borough. Two alternative names were suggested in place of Rushmoor: Aldershot and Farnborough or Farnborough and Aldershot. In the event, more than 81% of those who voted chose to retain the name, on a turnout of 29%[2]
Rushmoor's population has grown from 1,366 in 1801, through 39,616 in 1901 to over 90,000 in 2001.
In the 3 May 2007 elections, Rushmoor was a Conservative hold with 28 seats. The Liberal Democrats achieved 8; the Labour party gained 5 whilst another party (an independent Liberal Democrat, who was elected as a Liberal Democrat)achieved one seat.[3]
The Liberal Democrats are unrepresented in Aldershot (Con 9 and Lab 6) and the Labour Party are unrepresented in Farnborough (Con 19 and Lib Dem 8).
Whilst otherwise a majoritarilly White British area, the borough has a large Nepalese population, said to stand at around 9000, with up to 16,000 in the Blackwater Valley urban area, the highest number from Nepal in the United Kingdom outside of London. This is largely regarded as good by the locals, especially with the opening of Nepalese shops (City Cash and Carry, Everest Cash and Carry etc...) and restaurants (Gurkha Palace). However, there has been some racial tension amongst teenagers of both cultures.
In 2006, Rushmoor gained a Silver Gilt award in the South and South East in Bloom awards.[4]
Rushmoor is twinned with Oberursel in Germany, Meudon in France and Sulechów in Poland.[5]
