Russ Rymer is an author and freelance journalist with articles in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, The New Yorker, and others. His first book, Genie, a Scientific Tragedy, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and awarded with the Whiting Writers' Award. Rymer is also author of a book about American Beach - American Beach: a Saga of Race, Wealth, and Memory (re-subtitled American Beach: How "Progress" Robbed a Black Town--and Nation--of History, Wealth, and Power for the paperback edition).

His books center around the subjects of American Beach, Florida and the Lewis-Betsch family - specifically Abraham Lincoln Lewis and MaVynee Betsch.

From 2005 to 2006 Rymer served as editor-in-chief of Mother Jones.
