The word Russia has been used to refer to several Russian states:

• The Russian Federation, the modern successor state of Russian SFSR and the Soviet Union
• The Soviet Union, albeit only informally and inaccurately describing a multinational union of Soviet republics
• The Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, a Soviet republic in the union
• The Russian Provisional Government, the revolutionary state during the Russian Civil War
• The Russian Empire (Russian: Российская империя), a multinational state that existed from 1721 to 1917
• The Tsardom of Russia, the Russian state from the 16th century to the late 17th century
• The Grand Duchy of Moscow (Muscovy), the Russian state from the 14th century to mid 16th century
• The Novgorod Republic, a Russian state between the 12th and 15th century
• The Kievan Rus', the first Rus state formed by Varangians at the end of the first millennium. Often mistaken for the incorrectly transliterated name for Russian Federation

• The land of the Rus', the east slavic people known today as Ukrainians, Belarusians and Russians (Russian: Русская земля, Latin: Ruthenia)
