On the southwestern border of NC, southeast of Asheville; organized Apr 14, 1779 (prior to statehood) from Burke and Tryon counties, the latter organized in 1768 and abolished in 1779. Name Origin: For Gen. Griffith Rutherford (1731-1800), Indian fighter, member of the Provincial Congress, and Revolutionary War officer.
