Review

"Äs chönnti alls ganz anders sii" or more directly "It all could be completely different" describes the potential for Christina Zurbrügg's art. She is a singer/yodeler from Austria who also happens to play accordion -- and yes, your impression of yodeling could be completely different after listening to this recording. Ranging from funk to R&B to jazz and folk, Zurbrügg covers uncharted territory in the realm of yodeling. She even raps in her Swiss-German dialect on the title track. The musicians assembled for this project are all top notch, especially guitarist Gerald Gradwohl and bassist Reinhard Ziegerhofer, who both handle the changing styles and rhythms with amazing ease. It isn't coincidental that the swirling and repetitious melody on "Pinguin-Jodler" resembles those conventions used by the Penguin Cafe Orchestra; Zurbrügg openly cites the influence of Simon Jeffes' ensemble. At times, her yodeling may conjure up impressions of German pop yodeler Angela Wiedl (of "Jodelexpress" fame) but Zurbrügg is much more progressive and cutting edge than that (combine the vocal mannerisms of Dolores O'Riordan with Wiedl's yodeling style for a more suitable comparison). For those who bemoan the stagnancy of pop and world music, Äs Chönnti Alls Ganz Anders Sii... offers just one of countless unique possibilities for modern music. ~ Dave Sleger, All Music Guide
