Sūnium (Sounion), cape forming the southernmost point of Attica. It is mentioned by Homer (Odyssey 3. 278) as the point off which Apollo killed the pilot who guided Menelaus on his way to Troy. A temple to Poseidon was built on the promontory in the 440s BC; eleven of its Doric columns still stand.
