Its population was 973,372 (2006) and its area is 249 km².[1] It is the second most populous city of the state, after the capital. Recently it was the third largest, until Mesquita was split off from Nova Iguaçu. Currently, São Gonçalo lives a moment of euphoria with the announcement of the construction of what will be the greatest and most complex Brazilian refinery in Itaboraí, neighboring city, which will bring many investments and jobs for the city. It also has the promise of construction of a station on the beach of Pedrinhas and construction of a VLT line that would cut to all city binding it with Niterói and Itaboraí, but both the projects still are seen with much diffidence for the gonçalense population.
