Australia's premier large capitalization index, launched in April 2000. It has replaced the All Ordinaries Index on the Australian Stock Exchange (Asx) as the leading indicator on the exchange. The index is made up of 200 stocks selected by the S&P/ASX Australian Index Committee, based on liquidity and size. The number of companies is always fixed at 200. When an index constituent is removed, it will be replaced immediately by a company in the S&P/ASX 300, but that is not in the S&P/ASX 200 index. The index's liquidity supports derivatives trading and fund composition, and it is sufficiently broad to attract international investors.
